Easy Ways to Keep Fit on a Student Budget

As a student, it can be difficult to juggle studying, maintaining a social life, and properly looking after yourself. However, keeping fit is something that should be prioritized. Regular exercise is one of the most important things you can do for your physical and mental health. Exercising is known to change the brain to improve memory, thinking skills, and release those feel-good endorphins. Here are some easy ways to keep fit in Tucson, that won’t break the bank.

Start running

Summer is well and truly over, and we’re excited for these cooler temperatures! Fall is the perfect time to grab some friends, get outside and start running. Running is one of the easiest ways to keep fit because it burns fat quickly and works many different muscles at the same time. Plus, all you need to start running is a pair of trainers and a motivating playlist and you’re good to go!

Join a gym

This might not be the cheapest option, but if you go to the gym multiple times a week it’s definitely worth the money. Many gyms offer student rates making it possible to find some good deals. Sticking to a new gym routine can be difficult, and your first time at the gym may be slightly uncomfortable, but stick with it and you will really reap the benefits.

Walk. Everywhere!

Here in Tucson, we are blessed with beautiful outdoors and stunning scenery. Use some of your free time to explore our spectacular surroundings by walking to and from university, or by taking a break from studying to get outside. There are a ton of fitness trackers you can use to monitor your steps, such as fitbit, or even the health app on your iPhone.

Create an at-home gym

Working out doesn’t have to be expensive. Become your own personal trainer and get creative by exercising around the house. Many household items, such as bags of fruit or cans of food can double up as weights, and YouTube has plenty of workout videos that you can do from the comfort of your own home.

Join a sports team or society

You don’t have to be an Olympic athlete to join a sports society or club at college. Universities have so many sports teams for people of all abilities and skill levels, making them a great option if you’re looking to get some regular exercise and meet some new friends. For example, the University of Arizona’s Collegiate Club Sports has over 30 clubs and 1000 participants, and offers all sorts of activities from rugby to ballroom dance. Fees are usually kept pretty low, so you can get involved without making a serious dent in your student budget.
